1984: The Unperson

A photograph slips under your door. On your desk is the order to strike the same woman’s name from an old staff register. You remember her.

You are clerk 6079. The official on the telescreen talks to you, out loud, and listens to everything you say. He wants the correction filed and the household in order. He remembers your answers and notices when they change. Hide the photograph, write in the notebook only where he cannot see, and decide what you will keep.

Push him and he sends the warden. Push further and officers come up the stairs.
